Subject: [ROOTS-L] Why should? - oh my...

We must NEVER forget that there are people here of different educational
backgrounds, different ethnic backgrounds, from different countries, age is also
a factor. Vision, learning disabilities, lack of education in much younger
years; the list of reasons goes on and on..
My grandmother was an extremely intelligent woman who spent her days reading
and trying to learn everything about any topic you could imagine. She was
raised speaking German in a Minnesota town, and was forced to quit school in
the 6th grade to help support her family.
She could talk you under the table on many subjects but her spelling was
atrocious. She just never learned.
If someone corrected her, she was embarrassed because it made her feel
stupid. Sometimes she would ask us to write things down for her so that she could
learn the proper spelling and grammar, but it was difficult to overcome the
German grammar rules, which are very different than English. Today, based on
what I saw as an adult, I would say my grandmother was also dyslexic. I
could write a word and she could not copy it. But ignorant? Absolutely NOT.
Please don't judge those that you do not know.

BTW - you spelled beginning wrong. Ironic wouldn't you say?

I have been on these lists since their begining and
never heard that correcting grammar and spelling is
poor netiquette. It certainly isn't rude.
I used to correct such people but I have given it up
because those who use incorrect spelling and grammar
do not want instruction and prefer to wallow in
ignorance.
I simply never answer queries in which there are many
such errors, on any list.
