Subject: [ROOTS-L] Maps

I saw the reference to the fact that people should have maps for the area
they are searching.

Personally, I use a road atlas because it gives me all of the US in one
location. Certainly there are drawbacks, not every town is listed.
However... I use an old Geographic Nameserver website to find the general
location for the town I am searching. So if you do not have a map - try that
option. It will give you the county and the longitude/latitude so you can
find it.

However...I would like to ask where one gets individual state maps if you do
not travel to those states? I have found no source for them in my area.
And what about other countries?
Many of the European countries had border changes with each war, so when my
grandmother told me that her family was German and came from a certain town, I
was unable to find it. It was only years later that I learned that it was
now part of Poland after the wars.

So how do you find a map of Germany from 1850 that will tell you what you
want to know?

I am not new to genealogy, I have been at if for 25 years. But I have no
knowledge of how to get those elusive maps so I rely on my own resources and so
far that has worked.

Jo .
