Subject: [ROOTS-L] Documentation and Assisting Others

I think a large amount of people do not include sources as they are either new (I still have a LARGE amount of items I have to go back and add the source information to), are so overwhelmed with the amount of info they lose track of what and where, or are not hardcore genealogists.

Family History really has been picking up steam in the last few years and many people are only concerned with the story and not the details. Its all relative (pun intended) in what you are looking for.

I would much rather have a lead of undocumented sources to follow-up on and locate the source on my own than not to get the information because citation of source is missing.

also - on the subject of not assisting new researchers or others. I like to follow the combination of relaying the information with source AND how they can get that information in the future. Providing a person with fish and teaching them how to fish will keep them from being hungry now and in the future.

The only time I back down from offers to help is when the person EXPECTS me to do ALL the research and keeps sending messages of "Find anything new yet?" with no futher information or an update on what they are doing to stop duplicitous work.

Not everyone is able to have a grasp of English grammar and spelling for various reasons. I happen to be able to read and write on varying levels of fluency in several languages and find people always appreciate an effort to get things in their native language.

I like to think that most of us are on here to help others and get satisfaction with that than instead of worrying about all the i's being dotted and t's crossed.

I know this tends to ramble, but wanted to hopefully let people know no matter what level you are you are welcome in the Family History / Genealogical community.
