Gigi

I found a record from: http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/tx/grayson/land/grayson.txt, probably
referring to the same property, which says:

GRAYSON County Texas

Survey - Person or Concern bearing the land certificate at time survey filed.
Block - Block number.
Grantee - Person or Concern to whom the land was actually awarded.
Leag - League Flag. L = 4,428 acres, B = League + Labor. Labor = 177 acres.
Section - Section Number
Abs - Number of the Abstract on file at county courthouse and at the
Texas General land Office in Austin.

Survey Blk Grantee Leag Section Abs
ALFRED JOHNSON ALFRED JOHNSON 51 651

So, you are looking for abstract #651 filed at the county courthouse in Grayson. I'm not familiar with
the Texas land system, so don't know what is in the abstract, or where to find the original records, but
suggest you would want to contact the county.

As it happens, this database is also available at Ancestry.com, which has the additional information:

Office in Austin, Texas. The records provide information about lands granted and transferred within the

worked with Ancestry.com to update this database with current and accurate information.

This is what they had on Alfred:

Grantee: Alfred Johnson
Certificate: 2994
Patentee: Aaron Calvin
Patent Date: 10 Jul 1841
Acres: 1280
District: Fannin
County: Grayson
File: 6
Patent #: 219
Patent Volume: 1
Class: Fan. Bty.

It is interesting that the patentee is Aaron Calvin -- perhaps a relative?

Hope this helps.

Pat (in Tucson)

|Subject: [ROOTS-L] Land Survey Abstracts Indices
|
|
|I have a few questions that I hope someone on the list can
|answer. My ggreatfather owned property in Grayson Co. Texas
|in 1870 - 1880. I found on the internet a "Land Survery
|Abstract Indices of the Original Land Owners of Texas. Shown
|was my ggrandfather's name, Alfred Johnson. The only other
|information shown was Section 51.
|
|My questions are: What are Land Survey Abstracts Indices?
|What information do they contain, would there be family names,
|or other info useful for tracking my ggrandfather's family?
|AND...if I wanted a copy, how & where would I request a copy.
|
|Thanks in advance for any & all help,
|Gigi Elsmore
