Subject: [ROOTS-L] Re: ROOTS-L Digest V06 #62

Aloha from Hawaii.

And thanks to all the people I've been in touch with, from this group and others, who have been such a help to a (comparative) newbie. As in every group, there are people here who are a little more interested in themselves and their images than they are in being a source of information for those whom they apparently look down on. (Could that be???) But most of you folks are a-ok with me!!

I've got a problem. And let me try to state it in a way which will cause people to want to help. As a fairly senior citizen, I have a grandmother who was born in 1859. Her name was Lillian Eliza Smith, born in Lima, Monroe County, New York to Alfred Harmon Smith, b. 1828 and Anna Eliza Hatch, b. 1835. Now Lillian grew up in Buffalo and Lockport, Niagara Co. NY, moved briefly with her dad to Eureka KS around 1880, but went back to "the greater New York area" in 1882 or 83 and married her 2nd (kissing) cousin Henry Augustus Smith.

Gus & Lillie moved to Ontario, Canada briefly in the 1885-89 period, and came back to the US of A to live in Detroit , where they are found in the time span 1889-97.

At that time (1897), for whatever reasons, the family disintegrated. The two younger girls went to their paternal aunt & grandmother in Niagara Co NY. The oldest went to boarding school (and college) The dad kept a low profile and the mom completely (for me anyway) disappeared.

There were rumors about a care home in Brooklyn (while her husband was in Manhattan in the early days of the 20th c.) Lillian's dad turned out to have been epileptic. Her little brother, I discovered last year, was institutionalized in Illinois -- whether for being epileptic or being a little nuts I don't know.

But I can't find out what happened to her. Is she still alive? Did she go to Canada or Europe?

If you're a Smith, you really can hide a little bit. Or so it seems.

Any ideas?

David Kayner
