I have had experience with National Geographic and they protect all their
copyrights, no matter how old. I doubt this one will soon be able to be
copied/

Most likely since it is 120 plus years ago the copywrite ran out.  However, 
check the frontispiece for the publisher....if still in business, contact 
them.  Also, Google has many sites to answer Qs about copywrited material. 
I believe that there is a time limit for copywrites before the item enters 
public domain.
