Subject: [ROOTS-L] hummm critiquing a rootsweb list
Sender: roots-in@roots-l.rootsweb.com

well, howdy guys and gals,
i havent been posting for a long time; have been reading about the
exploits pretty regularly but the one that really caught my attention
was the critique series of another Rootsweb list ON ROOTS....i almost
felt them a flame of an entire list...

genealogy lists are ALL different...
all depends on the make up of the contributing and participating members,
all depends on the scope of the list,
and the way in which the list is administered...

ROOTS is prescreened, and follows a strict GENEALOGY ONLY requirement
- no technical, no computer, no hand holding on list (by both its
nature of not being immediate release of the posts and by its
prescreening)....

GEN-NEWBIE is far reaching, isnt prescreened, doesnt control the
method that a person might use to begin participation on a list of
many and is very willing to allow the kind of conversation that makes
people feel comfy in admitting that they dont know how to do something
that others do as second nature...

Part of the difference too is the sheer volume of one vs another.......
ROOTS maximum monthly posts since 2000 was 2500....
GEN-NEWBIE in the same time was 4567!
January 2006 ROOTS was 670 posts... GEN-NEWBIE was 2253!

In both cases, the list admins have no control over the
participants... except for the final sayso of a ROOTS prescreener,
whereby some posts sent in to ROOTS CAN be sent to oblivian. GN
admins dont prescreen but if you do flame others you will be gone and
some people do take that as a personal afront... and will retailiate
and say things to others that will put themselves in a favorable
light...

When i saw the list of the items that were discussed or posed to the
GN list, it covered a very short period of time.. many of which were
not responded to, left alone because they merited no additional
commentary.

What was missing was that in January postings of GEN-NEWBIE there
were over 70 HOWTOS (yes, that is were they reside now, not on ROOTS)
and another 10-20 commentaries with examples of how to structure a
google query (and that is an ongoing illustration on how to use a
search engine) and another 20-30 guides for thisNthat in genealogy,
with a bunch of posts about how to clear your cache so that you could
see what an updated website actually shows, and commentary about why
AOLers werent geting their emails....

A recent discussion was about what one should and should not do with
regard to getting junk/spam mail that could contain V* and just what a
very new newbie should NOT be doing when they get such an email... all
of this is towards the goal of protecting the genealogy work that
people have prepared, saved to their computer and which could be
jeopardized if a V* were to reach their machines...

what was absent was the REAL, participatory involvement of some of the
folks in the direction that the GN list was going to take in any given
day.. as on the ROOTS list, if one wants to change the direction, the
easiest, quickest and more dependable way is to make a query; form a
question; ask for help; dont suggest a topic, instead, ASK A
QUESTION....

so
if you want to feel comfortable before you post your computer question
amongst strangers,
if you want to feel comfortable before you post your genealogy
question amongst strangers
if you want to read about a LOT of material that might help you to
learn about thisNthat pertaining to genealogy and computers without
having to first EXPERIENCE IT,
if you want to know what to do when your machine is slow or dying,
if you want to learn about how to set your filters on your email to
avert the recent AOL/yahoo issue with letting emails pass thru to your
inBOX which could actually contain material that you dont want to see
or which might affect your receipt of emails on dial up,
if you want to know how to get your genealogy into a book format,
if you want to know who to make the umlaut on your german entries,
if you want to learn answers to your questions from a lot of people
who have various specialties,
if you want to know where to go and look for some obsure SOMETHING,
if you want to know where to go and look for something not so obsure,
if you want to have some relaxed list rules during holidays so that
you still have an outlet where the helpers still check in and will
take the time to help you when everyone else is PARTYING....well, then
visit gen newbie and make your own decisions about its value to you...

i would suggest, subbing in digest til you see what the list is all about..
and then when you want to dive in, sub under LIST so that you keep the
postings in a nice thread and so that the list is not saddled with the
oblivious DIGEST SUBJECT!

visit, make your own decision about a list different than ROOTS -
different but good...

genealogy is not a "dry" lonely hobby.. it thrives on people interaction...
catch that wave, be more successful... see ya.. valentine53179@gmail.com
