Just change its description to say that there are no limits and anything and everything can and will be discussed on GEN-NEWBIE. It doesn't take but a few words to describe it accurately. My advice to anyone who is considering joining the GEN-NEWBIE list would be to go into the archives and look at the types of messages there first. Once you're there and question the topics you'll soon be asked to leave (or unsubscribed). Isn't that right, Elaine? It is aimed at newcomers and the experienced who like to help are certainly always welcome, often the subscribers are new to both computers and the internet and many are just beginning genealogy research. For those who want tightly focused lists, there are some 29,000 Rootsweb mailing lists and people should be able to find a fit among them. General lists are precisely that, general lists. There are surname and locality lists that might be far more attractive to people who do not want general discussion lists. Gen-Newbie is aimed at internet users, often they are new users, though some who have been here awhile but want some coaching in a friendly environment and who often share their knowledge, like the freedom of a list that "discusses genealogy, family history, computer applications, and a wide variety of other topics with a goal of assisting anyone who wants 'community coaching' about the Internet, genealogy, computers, or whatever." The list's purpose is well spelled out, it's plain, what happens is that people join the list and then want to change the list to their idea of what a list should be. The list, however, has *never* changed its intent since it was created, for those who do not like lists with more than one subject focus it is not the place to be.
