That does not stop them from acquiring a map.  I have about thirty maps (mostly
US states but some European Countries) in my file cabinet.  These do wonders
for my research.

Newbies need to be educated.  They need to have maps for the areas they are
researching.  If they don't have the basic tools they will never get anywhere. 
They also need a few basic reference books (such as "The Source" and the "Map
Guide to the U.S. Federal Censuses" and many more), but maps are a must.  If
you are doing research in a country and you do not know the language you also
need a dictionary.

If you do not have the correct tools you will not progress very far.
