Maybe so, but if people are going to post with
erroneous information, then they also should be
willing to put up with a little criticism, and
correction of what they've posted. It does no good for
anyone to not tell another when they've got it wrong.
Thats how they learn.

I would say constructive criticism is good, but constructive is a keyword. I
agree with Karen who said there are all types of people on these lists and I
would add that those people have all sorts of reason for studying their
family history. Some of those reasons have changed over time as mine did. I
started out wanting to find out about my birth family because I was adopted, now I
have moved past just doing that to being fascinated with History in general.
When I am not hot on the trail of one of my own lines, I am happy to look
things up for others. I also don't mind asking for clarification if the first
information they give is a little fuzzy. It is sort of like a treasure hunt, and
a way I can relax after a stressful day at work.

One piece of input I would have is for those who consider themselves experts
on their family to keep an open mind. I have only been at this for about 15
years with 10 of those using the computer, and have found some things where
the family history totally missed people or those people somehow just got
misplaced in their reporting of their findings. Just this last week I was able to
track a relative to a family where the main researcher of that line had
completely skipped him in their reporting because he was born after the 1950
census and that was the one they used to show the names of the children. My poor
James just didn't exist because of people copying the main researcher and not
checking for themselves. So don't discount the newbie they may just know
something you don't or have information great aunt Ethel left that you have been
looking for.
