Subject: [ROOTS-L] 105 year old christening gown

This is to all who helped me with suggestions on how to repair a 105 year
old christening gown that my sister-in-law tried to repair with super
glue. I wanted to let you know what happened with the gown.
I kept putting off trying to repair it, just couldn't face the possibility
that the gown was ruined. A month before my grandson was to be baptized, I
had gone into my daughter's old bedroom, now my genealogy room, to get
something from the walk in closet. I turned around to leave, and spotted a
piece of fabric hanging over the edge of a shelf. Pulling it down, I
discovered that it was the blouse that my grandmother had given to my
daughter to wear for a Girl Scout fashion show to earn a badge. It was
long sleeved, and had lace on the cuffs. I cut the lace from the cuffs
leaving the stitching intact for extra stability and pieced it to the yoke
of the gown, front and back. When I finished piecing the lace, there was,
maybe, a quarter inch of lace remaining. I hand sewed the lace to the
gown, and the color of the cuff lace is almost identical to the lace on the
gown. It is difficult to see where the repair was made. I have saved the
blouse, will pack it with the gown, just in case.

Matthew Edward was able to wear his great, great grandmother's gown on
August 20, 2006.

Again, I would like to thank everyone who gave support and suggestions to
me. I have saved them all, they will also be packed with the gown so the
history of the gown is more complete.

Judy Brown
P.S. I guess Grandma was watching over me through all of this. :).
