Subject: [ROOTS-L] More search ideas for your Fischer family

Ann, if you have one of their male children's names and DOB--try searching thru that name and see if you can come up with anything.
Numerous free web sites have been listed this week for family information searches.

First, are you working backwards in your search? That is, did you start with your father, then your grandfather, etc.

Have you tried the "free" tree searches on the Rootsweb sites? Per haps the grandmothers side of the family may be posted to give you some clues about her husband.

Next, try to be open minded about the fact that the family information you have is the gospel, perhaps it is wrong. Also, people moved a great deal back then. Also, could the counties, etc. have been renamed. Just try to think with an open mind of all the possiblities

1)Have you tried all the free web sites? Type in, "World Connect Project" on your computer. Just put in last name, state and approx date of birth as too much information reduces the search possibilities. If nothing comes up extend the date of birth by 5-10 yrs or leave out the state.

On this site, put in the least amount of information at first. Often, too much information will give you a "Sorry" response. Try putting in the wife's name, or a male child, etc. Put in the oldest person first but then keep trying others. Put in just the last name if nothing comes up with the other information. Search through the "hits" carefully. It takes time but that is how we find what we are looking for.

2) Go to a free census web site. Go to that county and search for the family under names like "Pischer" or "Tischer" etc , Your family knew how to spell their name but perhaps the census taker had bad hand writing or a translator did not see the first letter as an "F"

3) At the free census web site, it is tedious but go through the county or area where you think they lived and look for them, one page at a time. I did find my great, great grandfather that way.

4) Is it possible that you could use the library to help you search since your spouse cancelled your subscription to Ancestry? Don't give up. One day you will find them. Lynne in Texas
