Subject: [ROOTS-L] Monroe County Georgia - 1821

Question for someone out there with the knowledge on maps.

In Georgia, there is a Monroe County which was created in 1821, the map
is dated 1821 and shows the many outline of land lots with their numbers.
Around these land lots on the boundry lines are little dots (like a
period) and beside each dot are some of the initials:

P.O.,
D. O.,
R. O.,
 P.O.P.,
W.O.
Hit,
Maples,
Hick,
Poplar,

and many others. There are some of these initials in every land lot(each
lot consist of 202 1/2 acres, I think) next to the little dots.

While some of them appear to be names of trees, they also could be
surnames, but dont think so. Since this is a newly created county from
Indian lands, could this refer to a mark such as a tree, or a metal rod
for property lines ?

Thanks for any information anyone out there would care to share.

Don Bankston
