Yes, there are bits -- in one case, just the name and stated DOB of the person. You can't "go from there"
to any other information. You can send a message to the "owner", which gives the "owner" your e-ddress,
but does not give the owner's back to you, unless you did, as I did, hit "reply" and left the entire
message on the screen. Not that I care, in this case.

I haven't gotten one that simply asked to "view information" -- don't know what that's about.

As to revealing anything about yourself, you can respond from the same email address you use here, and say
only as much as you want to. For example: "I got the information on John Jones at blank blank URL."

Well even if you keep it private they must be letting out enough for other researchers to find your
information. I just got an email from Ancestry that someone was seeking to view my information concerning
one ancestor. I would like to figure out how to contact this person without revealing too much about
myself. Most of the information I have is on line if you know where to look. Although the individual being
asked about I do have collateral information and he is tied into my family on at least two different
lines. So now I have to decide if I am ready to share.

Apparently the "Private Member Tree" is derived either from a GEDCOM that is uploaded as Private, or
"create your own tree from scratch". Starting one from scratch has a message:

\ \ Allow others to see my tree as a public member tree and allow my tree information to be compiled
into OneWorldTree

If you don't check the box, the information, in small pieces, will be shown (on a search) under the
heading "private member trees" or something like that. From there, you can only send e-mails to the
originator requesting further information. I think that's what Ann found and didn't get a response to.

But it is not included in the OWT search engine.

I got a query from someone the other day that said it was regarding an entry on a "personal tree" --
didn't say it was private or public -- problem is, the name isn't in any tree of mine. Go figure. I
responded to the person making the query, but haven't gotten a response. That's one of the reasons I
started the quest of new uploads and trying to figure this out.

By the way -- "click to share" apparently means that you can e-mail to other researchers to notify them
that the tree is "up." Has nothing to do with whether the tree is public or private.

As a long time supporter of Ancestry, but at the same time a long time creator/maintainer of long-distance
databases, I can say that it would be nice if they would have a big headline right after the Trees tab and
explain all this to their loyal old-timers and those just getting started. Look how much work we are doing
to figure this out.
