There's a white pages directory for Italy at
http://www.paginebianche.it/index.html -- in the form on that page,
filling in Ghibaudi for the Cognome (last name) and Metello for the Nome
(first name) results in two hits in Torino (Turin). One appears to be a
business and the other a residence, but I'm not sure because I don't
speak Italian. Also there are also a number of listings for just the
last name Ghibaudi; if your friend remembers anyone else from his
family, one of them might be listed.
