good telecast on the remains of Czar Nicholas II and Alexandria. It was to
make absolutely definite that their remains were what they were thought to
be. The Duke of Kent (England) was a descendant of Queen Victoria as was
Nicholas II [which made them cousins of some degree or other, but thru the
maternal line of Victoria - maybe even Alexandria (I don't remember) - but
the Duke participated in a DNA study which proved his ancestor was Victoria
and that so was Nicholas - so this verified that Nicholas II of Russia, his
remains were, indeed, what was thought to be. Then Nicholas II and
Alexandria [and their children] were given a 'royal' funeral and
subsequently given sainthood - I expect by the Russian Orthodox Church. This
has been very sketchy, but I'm sure you can Google and find out more on this
subject and TV program --- it really was very interesting!"

You may be thinking of the Duke of Edinburgh (Prince Philip), whose
mitochondrial DNA was compared to that of the body thought to be Alexandra,
the granddaughter of Victoria. Philip's maternal grandmother was
Alexandra's sister, so we would expect Philip and Alexandra to have the same
mitochondrial DNA.

it was PBS) that began with a 'nobody', but developed into and included
'celebrities'  - I recall it included Whoopie Goldberg and Oprah Winfrey;
the other 'celebs' or well-known people's name escape me now."

That would be "African American Lives". Details are here:
