I thought that Drew Smith sent  a very comprehensive reply to  your
question.  His answer was excellent as far as it went.
 
But since you were particularly interested in mitochondrial DNA, I  would
like to add my two cents worth.
 
If memory serves, not too long ago there was an historical question about 
a dead body somewhere out west.  Some folks claimed the body was
Jesse James and others declared it was not.
 
The problem was solved because Jesse's mother had left her DNA
(mitochondrial) because Jesse's father had left none of his.  So,  trace
Mother's family from her and Father's family from him.
 
One cannot get mom's DNA from Dad and vice versa.  But both are
valuable in specific instances.
