Tom

Actually, this is a very good use of the Y-DNA studies. BUT (you knew there'd be a "but", didn't you) you
have to find a good representation of Kemp (any spelling) males from the various geographic regions.

Problem we've encountered on the Clay family is that our [perhaps] cousins across the pond do not feel
much urgency to [pay to] help us colonials find our roots <G>.

If you and your cousins here can pay for the tests, and you can find some folk over there who have both a
reasonably documented lineage and the name, you may be on to something.

There seem to be a few studies already with the Kemp[] name. Check it out at http://www.familytreedna.com/

Which, by the way is a highly reputable organization, associated with the National Geographic Genographic
Project.

Good luck

Pat (in Tucson)

|Subject: [ROOTS-L] DNA Studies?
|
|
| Have you participated in a Surname DNA study?
|Were you satisfied with the results?
|Did it help to sort out family lines?
|Was it just a vague exercise?
|
|I have been working on multiple Kemp families ... with
|distinct national origins .... England, Scotland, Sweden,
|Germany and Belgium. In working with early, Medieval period
|records I am finding that it was possible for these families
|to have had a common origin. I did not think that this was
|likely, logical or possible.
|
|I am looking in to trying to do a surname DNA study on the
|Kemp family with participation from individuals with
|documented lineages to these respective countries to see if
|there is or is not a common thread. While the opportunity to
|document the connections genealogically is likely impossible
|... a DNA study might point us in the right direction.
|
|Is this a reasonable objective for a DNA study? Is this the
|sort of information I could get with the current technology?
|How many people would I have to get to participate in the
|study to have a responsible outcome? How much would this
|project cost? Which DNA research company should I go with?
|
|Many thanks,
|
|Tom
