Subject: [ROOTS-L] DNA: boy vs girl

-From: "GD Wells"
-Subject: A Woman's DNA
-Please explain why a woman's DNA cannot be traced. My maiden name is
-Donaldson. That was my father's family name. Why can't the DNA start with
-me, go to him and on back in time?

Sons get X from their mother, Y from father. Daughters get one X from each parent. I don't think anyone knows how to tell which parent donated which X chromosome. It's known that it does make a difference, but it's not understood. The X is passed from father to son to son. Easy to track. Also, the Y test is cheaper than the X test.

-I don't understand why not women - why only men? I have some male cousins
-on my mother's side of the family, but none carry the Donaldson name. I
-have read that the man tested has to have the last name. Is that true??

The surname is irrelevant. Some are adopted, others may have been sired by the milkman instead of by their mother's husband. We can't tell by looking at the records. Some current studies of DNA lineages suggest that the 'milkman' may have been more popular than thought.
