Subject: [ROOTS-L] DNA Studies?

Have you participated in a Surname DNA study?
Were you satisfied with the results?
Did it help to sort out family lines?
Was it just a vague exercise?

I have been working on multiple Kemp families ... with distinct national
origins .... England, Scotland, Sweden, Germany and Belgium. In working with
early, Medieval period records I am finding that it was possible for these
families to have had a common origin. I did not think that this was likely,
logical or possible.

I am looking in to trying to do a surname DNA study on the Kemp family with
participation from individuals with documented lineages to these respective
countries to see if there is or is not a common thread. While the
opportunity to document the connections genealogically is likely impossible
... a DNA study might point us in the right direction.

Is this a reasonable objective for a DNA study? Is this the sort of
information I could get with the current technology? How many people would I
have to get to participate in the study to have a responsible outcome? How
much would this project cost? Which DNA research company should I go with?

Many thanks,

Tom
