Anthony,
Go to Google and click on Images the type in USS Birgit. You will find a  
picture of the ship. Click on the picture and it give some information furnished  
by the US Navy as to the ship.
 
After that just GOOGLE for the USS Birgit. I'm sure there is lots of  
information there but I didn't really have the time to check it out.

Does anyone know if there is a source book available  for US Naval Service 
ratings held by a serviceman during WWII?

Also,  where would I begin to search for the military history of a specific 
ship? The  ship in question is the USS BIRGIT.
