Subject: [ROOTS-L] ReTintypes AND Census images

I really do not know for sure about tintypes fading. It seems logical
that the images would fade over time and especially in bright light.

I googled and did not find any thing specific about tintypes and light.

One source recommended scanning all tintypes so there would be a more
permanent record after the tintype faded.
I think one scan would not materially accelerate the fading. You would
not need more than one scan if you had the
digital copy. But I am not an expert.

But I would keep the originals in archival sleeves and in the dark just
to be careful.

I scan everything once and then mess with the digital copies.

As for census images being readable, it is suggested that you download
them as .PDF files.
then you can open them in Adobe Reader and zoom in for a much detail as
you like.
Also, if you click on the select image button at the top, then select
just the image, not the black edges, then go to FILE, PRINT,
SELECTION,
you will get a print that extends to the page setup margins. Most that
I have are readable just that way. Some require a bit of magnification.
