Subject: [ROOTS-L] Long lost Jameses
Sender: roots-in@roots-l.rootsweb.com

Searching(for years and years)for the family of James Edwin James, my
GGF and a very elusive character. He appeared immediately after the
Civil War at the home of another James family in Southampton County,
VA. I have been going on the assumption that he was a member of that
family, but at long last it has dawned on me that he had no connection
to them other than that he had the same name. Now I seem to be learning
of other James E. Jameses (one in what now is West VA in 1850 and
another in 1860 in Moultrie County, IL). I know my GGF was in southern
IL because he married my GGM there in the 1870's, produced a family and
died in southern IL(all in Johnson County)in 1885.Where he came from and
who his family members were is still a mystery to me. It' s in the
records in Johnson County,IL that I have seen that he was from VA.

The James family that I located in Harrison County, VA (now in west
VA)in the 1850 census consisted of the following: Wesley James age 40,
Abasha James age 35, James E. James, age 16, Blackburn James age 15,
Joseph James age 14, Rachel age 12, Emaline age 10, Frances age 8,Basha
age 6 and another male named "James"(which I guess is an error by the
census taker)age 4.

In the 1860 census for Moultrie County, IL there is also a James E.
James along with his young family. His age indicates he was born two
years before the man with the same name who was in Harrison County, IL
ten years earlier. It could conceivably be the same man. However,
Moultrie County, IL and Johnson County, Il are some distance apart. My
GGF James E. James had evaded me and other members of my family for
quite a number of years. It's very frustrating to have photographs
of a man, know where he is buried and be acquainted with all of his
descendants and still be unable to know exactly where he came from,
where his birth family was and what he was like. Any suggestions about
the problem would be appreciated.
