A relatively small percentage of Revolutionary War patriots lived long enough to submit the pension applications that are microfilmed and available through Heritage Quest. Many of the earlier records were destroyed by fire. So it is very common NOT to find a pension application for your Revolutionary soldier.

For those wondering if an ancestor is a Revolutionary patriot, Margaret's suggestion to contact the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) is a good one. Volunteers will check the DAR Patriot Index (at no charge) to see if your ancestor is recognized by the organization as a Revolutionary War patriot. Go to the following site to request a free lookup:

http://www.dar.org/natsociety/PI_lookup.cfm

If the DAR confirms your ancestor as a recognized Revolutionary patriot, you can order a copy of the application submitted by a current or previous DAR member for the Revolutionary patriot for a $10.00 fee. Most DAR applications list the source/sources of the Revolutionary War service. A copy of the request form for ordering a DAR "Record Copy" (DAR application) can be downloaded from the page below. NOTE: You will need to have the free Adobe Reader on your computer to view the .pdf form.

  http://www.dar.org/natsociety/content.cfm?ID=146&hd=n&FO=Y

Finally, I would like to point out two other free databases available online for Revolutionary War service information. If you believe your patriot was at Valley Forge, check out the Valley Forge Muster Roll at:

  http://valleyforgemusterroll.org/

The Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) have also provided a free searchable database of Revolutionary War patriots submitted in previous applications to the SAR and patriots included in their SAR Revolutionary War Graves Registry. However, it is important to note that much of the information from the Graves Registry was not verified. In these cases, the "Quality" field in the database will be marked "not evaluated." Patriots in the database who have been approved through previous SAR applications are marked as "SAR appl."

Go to the link below and click on PATRIOT LOOKUP PAGE. (The database may take 20 to 30 seconds to load.)

  Good luck with your search!

The selected Rev. War Pension files are on Heritage Quest. Check with
your local library to see if they have HQ. Many libraries allow at home
access to the HQ census and books and pension files if you have a library
card and just imput your barcode number. These pension files can be viewed
on microfilm at some libraries and the NARA regional centers.

You might want to check at www.dar.org for a list of patriots people
have joined the DAR by tracing their ancestry back to the individuals
listed.
