Subject: [ROOTS-L] Renaut in Ny, NJ and PA

I am researching a Renaut family that was in NY in 1880 and some members of
which moved to NJ and Ohio in succeeding generations.

I am aware that there were Renauts in PA long before this family emerged in
NY. I am trying to discover if there is any connection at all between the
two families, and also if I can connect with any of the people from the NY
line.

This is a long and twisted tale, and I am not sure how much general
interest it is, but trying to put it as simply as possible...

There was a Jean Joseph Victor Renaut who married a Harriet or Henriette
Theurret in Manhattan. The wife was supposedly from the Meurthe region of
France. The husband may have been from Paris, and they may have come in
through Canada. I have found no immigration data. I believe this would
have been in the early 1860's. I have what might be an 1860 census entry
for them, but there is no way to prove it I can think of. Neither was born
in the US. I have some naturalization info for JJV, and a date of death for
his wife.

They seem to have started in Manhattan in what is now SoHo, and moved
gradually north. In the 1870 census they are still down fairly far, by
1880 they are on Thompson street, a short walk to Washington Square Park.
In 1880 the wife died, and I have details about this, and the family seems
to have broken up. There may be a connection to a family named Le Blanc,
or Blanc.

They had five children. One I have seen referred to as John Augustine in
Freeman's bank records. (He is listed as white, so apparently not all
depositors were Black) One, Paul, moved to Jersey City and ultimately that
line ended up in Ohio. The third son I am not sure of. If this is my
family, and I am within a hair of solid proof that it is, then I know what
happened to the daughter, Clementine, and the youngest son, Edward.

I know that some of these names repeat in the PA Renauts, but I don't know
if that is just because they were popular French names. I don't know if
the family was Catholic or Protestant - I have been told the PA Renauts
were Protestant.

I have seen this name misspelled in many ways, but family members seem to
have been consistent in spelling it Renaut.

I would love to hear from anyone who might know about these people.
