Hi Ann,

The reason you are not finding vital records information online for New
York State is because they not available. NYS is very protective of its
formal vital records.

There are vital records indexes for the New York State available in
Albany at the NYS state library and public libraries in Rochester, Syracuse,
and I believe Buffalo. I believe the cut off for the death indexes is 1940
but I believe it is earlier for births (not sure of the year). Some one else
may weigh in on the dates and any other locations.

If someone locates possibilities for vital records in the indexes which
start about 1881, then you need to fill out a form and pay $22 per record,
even if they do not find what you request. It generally is quicker to order
from the location where the people lived rather than from Albany where they
wait may be as long as a year. Records for genealogical purposes will be
stamped thus, and I believe that now the causes of death may be blocked out.

You might want to call the Buffalo and Erie Co. public library. They
likely have a list of researchers who might not charge too much to do some
vital records index searchers for you. These can be time consuming. Who
knows they may even know of volunteers. There also is an Erie Co. Historical
Society which may do some research for a reasonable fee.

The phone number for the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library I have
from a 1995 publication is 716-858-7103 The address is Lafayette Square,
Buffalo, NY 12403. The address for the Erie County Historian in 1995 was 25
Nottingham Terrace, Buffalo, NY 14216. They do list town historians, but my
guess is that the list may be out of date. This url should work:
http://members.tripod.com/~wnyroots/index-historians.html

This was in the list for Newstead, NY:
Newstead, Town of, Town Historian
John J. Eckerson
57 John St.
Akron, NY 14001
(716) 542-2418

Unfortunately queries do not always result in people who can answer all
one's questions and one must go directly to the location where the people
lived and do the looking in person, or hire someone familiar with the local
records to do some sleuthing. Frustrating I know, as I am having a similar
problem with a couple families I am researching. Queries don't seem to get
to anyone with information, and the local records I looked for are sparse or
non existent.

I did want everyone to know, however, that NYS does have vital records
indexes which can guide one to the vital records they need to purchase.
Anyone should make sure to copy the certificate number carefully so that you
make sure to get the document you want.
