Subject: [ROOTS-L] CARTER-COFFIN: NH/ME late 1700s
Sender: roots-in@roots-l.rootsweb.com

John CARTER, born between 1770-1775, presumably in New Hampshire, married at
Barrington, New Hampshire on 21 February 1794 Lydia COFFIN, born around 1774
in NH, both "of Dover" (NH) at the time of their marriage.

In the 1790 Federal Census of Dover New Hampshire, there is a Stephen Coffin
with 1 male over 16, 1 male under 16 and 2 females. Lydia, unmarried in
1790, would fit into the profile of this family. [Eliphalet Coffin, also in the
same census, has already been elminated as the father of Lydia.]

However, in the 1800 Federal Census of Dover New Hampshire, there is only one
family by the name of Stephen Coffin [Copffin sic] enumerated at Dover. His
household included 1 male age 0-10 years, 1 male 26-45 years, 3 females 0-10,
1 female 10-16 and 1 female 26-45. The inclusion of children under the age
of 10 makes it unlikely that this Stephen couldl be the father of Lydia. It
is tempting to assume that Stephen Coffin of the 1790 and 1800 census at Dover
are one and the same - and, that he is the same Stephen Coffin, "of Dover"
who married at Madbury NH in December of 1788 Deborah TWOMBLY, she "of
Madbury." In addition, the inclusion of a female age 10-16 lends credence that she
is one of the 2 females in the 1790 census.

John and Lydia (Coffin) Carter removed to Parsonsfield ME after the birth of
their first child at Lee, New Hampshire. That first child was named Stephen,
perhaps memoralizing her father or her brother.

Of their nine children, they were named (in this order): Stephen, Lydia,
Mary, Love, John, Solomon, Betsey, Gardner and Samuel. The given names of
Love and Gardner are common within the Coffin family.

In 1850, there is no evidence of John Carter; however, at Parsonsfield,
Maine, we find a Lydia CARTER residing in the household of John Durgin. She was
age 76 and born in NH. Not yet proven but quite sure that Julia Durgin was
her granddaughter.

The highly respected Coffin Genealogy which was published in the New England
Historic Genealogical Register, makes notice of a Stephen Coffin, son of Abner
and Mary (Rawlings) Coffin, born in 1744 but does not follow him further.
It also makes notice of Lydia Coffin, his sister, who married Josiah Durgin and
resided at Lee, New Hampshire (where the first child of John and Lydia
(Coffin) Carter was born.

We have found no probate records or vital records to prove (or disprove) the
possibility that Lydia () Carter was the daughter of this Stephen Coffin.

Any suggestions would be most welcome - or correspondence with anyone who
shares this line.

At this point, the parentage of John Carter remains even more of a mystery
than his wife.
