Subject: [ROOTS-L] Whitner (Whitener) family

Recently, I have begun more seriously to research the line of my great grand mother, Lizzie Ellen Whitner (Whitener). I am working to find her parents and siblings. Here is what I have so far, please bear with me.

Lizzie Ellen Whitner (Whitener) b. 7 Sep 1865 in Texas as listed in the 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930 census records from primarily Orr, Love, Oklahoma, USA
Died: 14 Jun 1953, Ringling, Jefferson, Oklahoma, USA
married: George Washington Power(s) b. 22 Jan 1863, Texas; died: 8 Apr 1917, Orr, Love, Oklahoma, USA
            Children:
Minnie Power, b. abt 1882, Indian Territory (Oklahoma)
Charlie Washington Power, b. 18 Jun 1887, Indian Territory (Oklahoma) died: 1918
Henry Steven Power, b. 7 Nov. 1887, Indian Territory (Oklahoma) died about 1931, Ringling, Jefferson, Oklahoma, USA
George Thomas (Tom) Power, b. 2 May 1891, Indian Territory (Oklahoma)
Frank Power, b. Jan 1893, Indian Territory (Oklahoma) died before 1910
May Iva Power, b. 1895, Indian Territory (Oklahoma) died 1929, Tahoka, Texas, USA
Malinda Ellen Power, b. 17 May 1897, Indian Territory (Oklahoma) died 2 Sep 1968, Stockton, San Joaquin, California, USA
                            (my grandmother, a wonderful lady!)
Lula Evaline Power, b. 30 Mar 1899, Indian Territory (Oklahoma), died 9 Mar 1980, Guthrie, Logan, Oklahoma (crippled for life with Polio)
Walter Power, b. about 1901, Indian Territory (Oklahoma), died same year, Orr, Love, Oklahoma, USA
Jesse Jennings Power, b. 25 Jun 1902, Indian Territory (Oklahoma) died 10 May 1986, Meeker, Lincoln, Oklahoma, USA
Callie Maude Power, b. 25 April 1905, Indian Territory (Oklahoma) died 12 Nov 1997, Freedom, , California, USA
Ethel Etta Power, 26 Jun 1909, Orr, Love, Oklahoma, USA died 17 Dec 2003, Emmett, Gem, Idaho, USA

In the 1910 Federal U.S. Census, Burney Twsp, Love, Oklahoma, Lizzie and her family are listed, and living right next door is a James J. Whitener 30 years, and his wife Ollie, 25 years old. James gives as the place of his Father birth as Georgia, and his mother, Texas, which is the same as Lizzie gives. I am fairly certain James is Lizzie's brother.

In the 1900 Federal U.S. Census, Orr Town, Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory, this James (b. Feb. 1879) is living with his father, a T. M. Whitener, b. Jun 1842, Georgia, and mother Annie Whitener, b. Apr 1855, Texas, USA Also living in the household is T. M. Whitener's brother, an E. D. Whitener, b. Feb 1861 a widower.

This may be Lizzie's family, but I have yet to make the definitive connection. I have confirmed Lizzie's maiden name through her two youngest children, Callie and Ethel before they died, and through a few of the children's death certificates, but cannot obtain a death certificate on Lizzie for some reason. I also can find no evidence of a Social Security number as she is not listed on the Social Security Death Index, provided I have searched it correctly.

Also perhaps another clue, although this may be a coincidence, a boarder is listed as living in this household is a George Davis, b May 1880, which well may be Lizzie's husband George's nephew, born by his sister Susan.

I really apologize if this is too confusing!

Also, family lore holds that she (Lizzie) was probably of Native American blood, though I have yet to prove this.

I am hoping that someone out there may either have some helpful information on the family, or some suggestions to aid me in my research.

Thank you in advance,

Steve in Oregon :o)
