Dear Clara,

I can give you my three good experiences with old letters in 1980's when there was more snail mail than email.

  1 - Texas Archives, Austin, TX 1986
While searching my gg grandfathers brother Ryden Grigsby Hill FRANKLIN in the veterans papers of the civil war, I found a letter written to HIM one of his descendants in 1953. Even though it had been 33 years since the letter had been written when I got back to La Marque I called information and found that the address in Elpaso, TX still had a person with the last name of CADE living there. I still am a lady who doesn't like to call strangers that I haven't met or at least talked to. Also being a world class procrastinator it was several weeks before I wrote. Within a week or so I received a letter to call the letter writers daughter giving me her phone number. The mother had been dead since 1977 and a son had lived in the home until three months before I wrote. The contractor that had been restoring the home to put it up for sale took the letter to the dau who then sent me the info that her mother had gathered. The mother had thought that the her parents had been m: in
Greenville, TX. I was able to send her a copy of Rhyden Grigsby Hill FRANKLIN & Mary Elizabeth S. CAMP MORGAN's marriage license.

2 - About 1992 a lady from CA sent me a letter from a descent ant of Barnard FRANKLIN that was written in late 1950,s, I wrote a letter to the same address in Dobson, Nc and put a notice to the Post Master that if the person wasn't at this address to forward my letter to the nearest genealogy society or local Library. In about six week I had a letter from the 90 year old widower of the lady that had written the letter. He was in nursing home in Ashville, NC and apologized for taking so long to answer. He had the care takers take her very large ancestor chart and make letter size sectons that I put together and now have all of her lines which I am pleased with. From her mother back we go to 1631VA. I had my direct line back to 1631 Lawrence & Mary PAYNE/PAINE FRANKLIN through Barnard & Mary CLEVELAND FRANKLIN both b: VA: & NC d: 1828 -1828, down to my self.

3 - Another letter sent me by some one who's name I can't remeber at this late time of night was written in 1926 to from some one in Neodashay, KS (that isn't the correct spelling) who wanted to know know if Rhoda CLEVELAND FRANKLIN was indian. I sent it to the public library and the Liberian knew the family as the home was with in a block of the library. She delivered the letter to the surviving daughter who answered me. She still was interested in the same question. I suggested that she look in the Dawes Rolls.

I would suggest that any type of letter is not too old to retrace or at least make a good try. I think that a lot of new researchers have missed out OT the joys & thrills that have been found in snail mail, court houses & old cemeteries. I love my computer but not as much as going to a genealogy meeting and hearing first hand of ways and means to research or verity your email information. Forgive me if this isn't making sense as i get carried away, Johnnye

Several years ago I found mention of a book, or possibly just a booklet,
entitled "Bennett Family in South Carolina" by Miss Annie P. Jones. It was
written sometime before 1924.
I have never been able to find anything more on this so am hoping someone
on this great list might have a memory of it.
Thanks for any suggestions.

Clara
