Subject: [ROOTS-L] Old Snapshoits and Godfrey Library

I had 4 photograph albums which were falling apart, dating back to the 1920's. I very carefully removed the snapshots (no vintage photos) from the albums. Most of them had the the black paper still clinging to the backs. All I did was take them one by one, placed paper towels on the table and very gently and carefully, lightly sponged (did not rub) the backs with dampened cotton balls. I used a small pocketknife and a dull razor blade to scrape off the black paper. I then placed them on the paper towels with doubled paper towels on top of them, placed a lightweight book on top of that, and let them dry. All came out flat and ruined only the first one I did in the process. Luckily, I had 4 more prints of the same picture. It took almost two weeks working sparetime to do this, and all but the one came out perfectly! There were over 800 photos from the 4 albums. Not the archival way, but it worked with much time and patience.

I searched the Godfrey Library site several times 2-3 years ago, but never could find out if they had any information for Indiana, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, or Iowa. I wrote 3 e-mails to them with no answer. Needless to say, I never did join, but have been a subscriber to Ancestry.com for 6 years.
