Ann, as someone has already said - Texas would not have an 1840 federal
census since it did not join the Union until 1845. However, if I may take
this a step further?

Liberty, of course, is an original county organized in 1837 and Hardin was
created in 1858 from Jefferson and Liberty counties ... Jefferson was also
an original county organized in 1837. So while you will not find a federal
census until the 1850 you may be looking at Liberty and Jefferson - but not
Hardin (1858) until 1860.

In addition to our Texas State Archives in Austin, Texas has regional
depositories - mostly in public or university libraries. However, we do
have one that is a stand-along unit - the Sam Houston Regional Library and
Research Center --- which has a very nice genealogical department --- is
the one covering Chambers, Hardin, Jasper, Jefferson, Liberty, Newton,
Orange, Polk, San Jacinto, and Tyler counties.

We do have many other records. They would have early marriage records
deeds, probate, tax rolls, etc....
Check out their web page at http://www.tsl.state.tx.us/shc/ They are very
nice about answering questions.
PO Box 310, Liberty TX 77575-0310 or call 936-336-8821.

To read about the Center, see the Handbook of Texas Online at
http://www.tsha.utexas.edu/handbook/online/articles/SS/lcs8.html

I check "The First Census of Texas, 1829-1836 To Which Are added Texas
Citizenship Lists, 1821-1845 And Other Early Records of the Republic of
Texas" (Marion Day Mullins) but did not find your names.
