Just because there are no obvious signs of distress to the pictures
upon immediate application of a chemical or product does not mean it
is safe in terms of preservation.  I would be very leary of any
procedure not recommended by a professional preservationist as we
don't know what lasting effects of chemical processes have on pictures
down the road and the impact on durability of the photos.
