I have read several recommendations not to remove the photos because  of the 
resulting damage.  Unfortunately I did not read this until I had  removed 5 or 
10.  My understanding is that the best thing to do is to  place acid-free 
paper between the pages to prevent further damage and scan  any that you want to 
move.  This recommendation suggests to me that there  is not a big problem 
with having the black on the back of the photo.
  I read this on at least one library archival site.  Sorry, I  don't 
remember where.
