Subject: [ROOTS-L] Godfrey Library

I have been a member for over a year. Yes, it is well worth the investment, and for me just the access to census records makes it worthwhile.

Example: previously I lived 20 mi from nearest library to obtain census records. My car gets 20 mpg and in todays market that means $6.00 for ONE round trip. Therefore, just 6 trips would pay for the subscription. I have never found a complete answer to research in ONE trip.

Via books at Heritage Quest, I found a small booklet re Sackets Harbor, NY - one of my home towns.

There are books and newspapers online. However, it depends on what newspaper you are looking for. And what about their passenger lists for Ellis Island & Castle Gardens ?

I have been working on entering War 1812 soldiers in alpha order into a spreadsheet for a particular county. There were as many as 4 different spellings for surnames and given names in the material I was working with. By having my spreadsheet open, then going to Godfrey and opening Heritage Quest census records, I could open a minimized window for the vierwing and compare spellings from the 1810 & 1820 census records side by side. It has been extremely helpful for my project. PLEASE no request re this project as it is not finished.

Just because Godfrey changed leadership does not change the worth of the site. Would you stop buying a car at your favorite dealership just because it has a new manager? Would you stop buying groceries where you had been shopping for years because they have a new store manager ?

It is possible that some of the sources may have been removed because of inactivity to those sources, to make space for other items. Maintenance of sites is a very time consuming task.

As is my wont, I have been delaying joining the Godfrey Library, despite
the rave reviews. I understand that the gentleman who headed it up has
moved away and since then, I haven't heard much about it other than
complaints that they have removed some of their sources. Is it still well
worth the $35.00 per year?
