Subject: [ROOTS-L] Re: ROOTS-L Digest V06 #181//STORIES

Perhaps this should not be told.....But statue of limitations are most
likely expired as are most folks for the time.. OH WELL..........

In the center of the four way intersection stands this beautiful, fully
adjustable cannon. ( up, down, left and right. I think it came from WW 1. It was a
great toy for a youngster who could make believe he was the greatest shot in
the world. Of course....that was me.
Only one thing wrong with that scenerio was the darn thing did not shoot.
Something was wrong and that NEEDED to be fixed. What to do????
With help from some friends we collected fire crackers, ammunition and
anything that had powder. (We use to send tin cans into the air with this stuff )
We managed to get a pretty good pile and had now to make a wick. That took
a lot of attempts as the breach would prevent the fuse from getting into the
barrel. That being solved it was now time TO LOAD!
Lower the barrel and dump the powder,(in a bag) then the ammo. A keg of
small nails.. Elevate the barrel so the stuff got all the way inside. ( I
guess)
.The fuse that took so long to make was set into the powder and out the door
that we closed with hay wire,( should work). Our target?? Hummmm. The
corner building with the glass windows should be fine.
The time was now before the darn cop chased us away again...We lit the
fuse and ran like heck when it sizzled away.
Hidden next to the shoe store we waited..and waited...and waited.
Nothing.
Better go see what happened. It worked O.K. in the barn and at the well and
behind the movie house. We waited some more...(must have been at least two
minites since we lit the darn thing but at the time...it was a loooooooong
time. About the time we were going to check our handy work....BOOOOM. A huge
cloud of black smoke, glass breaking and cars banging. Stuff all over the place
and ..We ran like Hell.

I never did get caught but I feared for many years that I would. This was
about 1942/3 and it was reasoned the Germans had gotten to the town. OH Well
that all past and things settled down. I have wondered often just how many
investigations were made about this but ,,,Now you know.
