Subject: Family history book legality

Hi:

I too am working on a family history book about a greatgreatgranfather and his descendants. I am sure I also will have an occasional objection although so far everyone is willing to provide information I have asked for.

I basically am doing what a couple of others have said - if it is a public record then I will publish it as it is my effort and my cost. Yet, even here I won't publish the fact that the husband of a close relative served time in prison for bad checks, child support, etc. He and his wife later got back together. He now is deceased but this is one fact I will omit as long as she is living.
I will publish what I know about a relative who was an outlaw about 1900 as I have found newspaper articles verifying his escapades. Some of his granddaughters are still living and acknowledge the fact that he "was quite a rounder in his day!"

I haven't decided on birthdates of living but may omit them if requested. My aunt published a similar book two years ago and there weren't any objections to birth dates.

My final thought is if you let your relatives dictate what you publish are you really being accurate and truthful? You probably can never satisfy everyone. As Shirley said, don't publish gossip - stick to the facts and go ahead with your book.

Lawrence Clay
