I'm sure lots of people are satisfied with one of the free programs, and
I applaud that LDS makes PAF free as it seems to be a good and stable
program. However, all programs have their strengths and weaknesses and all
researchers do not have exactly the same needs. So, it is good to have
choices, no matter how much each one of us likes the program we are
currently using.

For those who want some really nice reports and charts, RootsMagic does
a good job worth a wide variety of reports and lists. It also has easy data
entry, easy gedcom import and export, and good sourcing capabilities to
mention what are some of my needs.

Since programs do not always exchange information well, it pays for most
of us to research a few programs to see what best meets any one person's
needs, rather than just thinking they can change later. Gedcom exchanges do
work for most basic standard facts, but some of the special features and
user defined facts do not always transfer well from program to program.
Sources don't always transfer well either.

That being said if someone is a rank beginner to computers and
genealogy, they might want to choose the program a friend is using, to make
the learning process easier.
