Hi Carol,

I think the best overall program is RootsMagic for both advanced users
and those fairly new to genealogy. There is a free demo available at
www.rootsmagic.com . The only difference between the demo and what you pay
for is some sort of mark through the reports, so you can try it out with all
the features to see how you like it before committing to buying.

Generally I think ROOTSMAGIC is believed to be a little better than
Legacy with many wonderful reports and excellent means of sourcing. It is
quite an intuitive program, and quite easy to use as computer software goes.
Legacy has many loyal users however. RM also has a very helpful users list
and the program author participates on the list.

There is a direct import option from FTM without needing to use a gedcom
file, which eliminates the problems that many programs have with importing
gedcoms from FTM since FTM does not adhere well to the gedcom standards.
That is new feature which was added to RootsMagic just a month or two back.

The program which I believe has the most publishing options is The
Master Genealogist, but it has quite a steep learning curve according to
many sources. It also costs quite a bit more and is said to run fairly
slowly.

    Good luck in your choice.

Margaret Scheffler
