I believe if someone got the "real" records, they would find that this "Alaska" as a state means something
else entirely.

The headers are:

Name
Birth Year
Nativity State or Country
Enlistment Date
State
Enlistment State

Only in the "state" column do you find "alaska" used as we have noted here. There are 418,555 Alaska
entries, mostly for folks not born or enlisting in alaska.

If you do a "smith" search, you will find that several other entries have locations in this category other
than the "nativity state" or "enlistment state", including a few with "U.S. At Large" - 1840 for Smith,
171,000 plus for a general search.

I suggest there may have been "regions" or something else that is the reference here.

It would be interesting to see an original form, (WD AGO Form 317 (used from 1941-45), WD AGO Form 372
(used from 1945-46), and Enlisted Reserve Corps Statistical cards. ) and see what this really meant.
Anyone for a trip to NARA?

Pat (in Tucson)
