My father served in the Navy during WWII. He told me that at some point
after the War started enlistments for the Navy were no longer accepted,
only enlistments. He said the reason for this was that the Navy had too
many enlistees and the Army didn't have enough. If a man had the choice
of being shot at while sitting a wet, cold fox hole or while aboard a
ship with a dry bunk and hot meals, many preferred the ship.
