I would think that anyone wanting to join a DNA study for a particular
surname would want to join the Rootsweb list for that surname, and see what
company was being used for that surname's DNA studies. The PIKE project our
family has joined uses FamilyTreeDNA http://www.familytreedna.com as do
many others.

I found the following explanation on the Pike web page: Before you join
the project, you might want to consider whether you have any interest in the
National Geographic Society Genographic Project. There is a partnership
between the Genographic Project and FamilyTreeDNA that allows people to do
their first DNA test with either one and then transfer their test results
over to the other one. Which one to start with is a personal choice, and
each choice has its own benefits.

Wherever you choose to have it done, you want to have it recorded where
you will find matches, so it may take a little leg work on anyone's part
before they have their DNA tested and find the results aren't going to where
they are needed for comparison.
