If you didn't live near one you signed up for your Social Security number with your employer who would then mail it in. In some instances the employer would send them to a coporate office which would then send the applications to their local Social Security office. In my town in northern Michigan many young women got their first job at the local dimestore and applied for their Social Security number at the same time. The applications were sent to the corporate office in New York and all those Michigan women ended up with "New York" numbers (beginning with a 100 series rather than 300 for Michigan). For years they wondered why they ended up with such different numbers than their non-dimestore friends! Larry
