Just opened another e-mail ... So we're still kicking this subject around at
the end of the day. I wonder if perhaps this topic can be laid to rest? I'm
sure the person who made what some people feel was a mistake is terribly
hurt and feel chastised. Enough of the 'wet noodles' already!

There was a time - remember? or am I the only one old enough? - that we were
instructed to PLACE ALL SURNAMES IN CAPS ... Of course, that was the day
before computers where now we can use fancy typeface to set those names off,
or use color to do so ...

There are those who are more concerned about this than other things. And we
all have preferences .. as a teacher and lecturer, I always recommend that
people include not just the town and state but also the county
since all records - even the federal census - is accessed by the county.

Some people do not use their spell check and then say it does not matter ...
yes, it does. And even when you do use spell check it will not distinguish
between which word you meant to use ... two or too or to? So we still need
to read and catch it if we can.

There are some of you out there that I recognize as doing research for
others and some that I know want to. If you are not careful in this, then
how can I be sure you'll be careful in your research and in the typing of
your report?

The e-mail is all we see of some of you. The 'first impression' saying is
true. And how you word your e-mail, especially when asking for help, is
important. If it's sloppy it tells me that you may not care to make the job
easier ... so should I care as well? Are you simply telling me that while
you are asking for my help you don't care enough about that first
impression - you don't care what I (others) may think of you?

I want to always help when I can but my schedule does not always allow for
the time it would take to wade through something that someone just sends
without reading it over, making sure it is in some kind of readable form,
gives dates and locations, etc. Not time to give a class here but we should
all try to improve .....

CAPS are the last thing that I worry about ... who made the rules anyway?
And who would consider it shouting if a sentence asking for help is in CAPS?
Eyesight or training or habit ...

A lot of times I note a thread can be run in the ground with nothing new
added. It the question has been asked and answered then, unless we have
something NEW to add, we should not.

In each instance where I have used CAPS it is not because I am shouting at
you .. no voice for it! But it is because I wanted to emphasis ...
Perhaps we can call it a day ....

Good hunting, Everyone! Success to you all in your search!
