I've done some research on this topic while going through family
photos and while hosting a chat on the topic of genealogy and
photographs. If memory serves me well, nearly every source I've found
(not an extensive list, but a credible list) stated that using photo
squares on *acid AND lignin-free" paper is the best option. If photos
are to be stored in boxees, it is best to use boxes that are also free
of those elements and boxes that have reinforced corners (if you have
an iKEA store near you they sell some in various colors). When using
plastic sleeves or pockets for any type of picture or document it is
best to use mylar or polypropylene. Never write on the front of
photographs; if you must label them on the pictures themselves, write
on the back with soft lead pencil only and along the edges.

For identifying ancestors via photographs, may I recommend any
resource that includes Maureen A. Taylor. I have a book by her,
"Uncovering Your Ancestry through Family Photographs" and it is
excellent.
