Before I tell you about how I store photos on my computer, I'd like to
inform all our listers of a new internet chat that relates to the
topic of photography and genealogy. It's called Your Ancestors in
Pictures, and in this chat we YAP about lots of topics related to the
pictures. I host this chat, but it is run in a
"members-helping-members" chat as opposed to me leading it (I'm
learning right along with everyone else). The first internet chat
will be held this WEDNESDAY April 12th at 9:00 Eastern time at
www.genealogycommunity.com. It will require people to register (it's
free and easy) to access the chat. Once in the chat room, click on the
"Forum" pull-down menu at the top and highlight the room Genealogy.
This week we're YAPping about digital cameras. Past topics that will
likely cycle back around include organizing photos, preserving photos,
identifying ancestors in pictures, scrapbooking, blogging, and much,
much, more!

Now, to answer your question: I have a bunch of subfolders within my
"My Pictures" folder. (When you go to save pictures and get the
little gray box that asks you where you want to save the file to,
there should be a list of available folders. Mine is defaulted at "My
Documents", and in there is a folder entitled "My Pictures". FIrst I
double click on the "My Pictures" folder to open it. I then click on
the icon of a yellow folder to the right (putting your cursor over it
will bring up a little message window saying "new folder" and name it
something that relates to the picture(s) I'm downloading. I have
folders for each surname I'm searching, locations I'm sesarching in,
one entitled "Gravemarkers", and other titles related to the pictures
I have. I then save the pictures in the correlating folder. In the
same "My DOCUMENTS" folder I have another folder entitled "Ancestry".
Again, I create subfolders for each type of research I'm doing. I have
folders within these folders, too. For example, in the main MY
DOCUMENTS folder, I create a folder entitled ANCESTRY. Inside there I
created a folder for CENSUS RECORDS. Inside each Census folder there
is a folder for each census YEAR. THat's where I put all my images of
census records (I name the image when I download it to say the name
and year in case I misfile it). One could just as easily creat
subfolders for SURNAMES instead of CENSUS years. To each their own.
Other subfolders within my ANCESTRY folder include: Military Records,
Gravemarkers, Documentation, Vital Records, Biographies, Obits, etc.

For paper copies, I purchased two larch 3-ring binders. Inside each
have a system much like that described above. I have one binder for my
paternal lines and one for my maternal lines. I can see me having to
get more binders in the future but right now I find this easier than
filing cabinets, which I originally used (one hanging folder per
surname, with file folders inside for type of record..census, wwi
draft, vitals, etc). I find the binders easier only because I get
lazy when I finish researching and don't want to have to re-file
things. With the binders, I have the binders out when I'm researching
and keep them open to the section I'm using so all I have to do is
close the binder! Plus, it's easier to take the info with me if I go
to the FHC or library.
