I believe most people expect a longer life for cds stored in good
conditions than what you describe the newsletter said. However, the point
is not to rely on any one type of media for extended periods of time and to
have multiple backups on different types of media. In general you should
expect CD-R disks to last longer than the rewritable variety because they
are burned differently. The quality of the disks can make a difference too,
but I'm not sure how one judges the quality of major brands in advance.

I backup primarily to external hard drive, zip disks and flash drives --
and occasionally to cds. All types of computer storage media should be
stored in cool, dry settings and not in overly damp, humid conditions.

It would not hurt to redo your cds every few years -- if for no other
reason than to keep up with new technologies.
