Subject: [ROOTS-L] Re: SSDI Need contact for SSA

The way I understood it, was that the Social Security Department would not
make corrections on the death index, but you can go to the "tools" column
and
click on "add Post-em" and make a note about your correction. That way an
interested party would have the information and a contact person.

-----
SSA WILL make corrections if there are significant errors in the SSDI. The
errors shouldn't be reported to RootsWeb or Ancestry or whichever website
hosts the SSDI, but must be made by the family/heirs/representatives to SSA. The
errors will be corrected in the next monthly update to the SSDI.

Adding a Post-em note is a good idea if you have any
comment/correction/addition to make to an SSDI entry, and it does help future researchers who access
the record--but it doesn't correct the SSA's records. I'm assuming here, of
course, that you are talking about an actual error in the record--such as
John Smith died in March2006 and not January 2006 if that is what you found in
the SSDI.

SSA wouldn't change the Last Residence entry to agree with where the
deceased individual lived at the time of death if the entry they have on file is
correct based on what "last residence" actually means--which I've explained
previously and Fred just gave a great example of. It can it can be a different
place than you would expect--i.e. a family member taking care of finances for
an elderly relative (perhaps acting as Representative Payee for his benefit
check).
