I think particularly in regards to the internet one can run into trouble by
trying something without first investigating other people's experiences with
a particular program or service. There's so much out there, it's easy to
think "hey, that looks like a good thing!". But what may look like a good
thing can be a scam, a technological petrie dish for viruses, a phishing
expedition, or other disastrous malady. I myself am starting to ask people
I've come to trust about ways to get my AOL bookmarks transferred into
Firefox or IE, since AOL uses a rather exclusive format for their bookmark
files that other programs cannot import. I have over 500 bookmarks (over 300
genealogy ones alone), so going to each site to C & P the url and then going
to them in IE or Firefox is not feasible. I know there are services
available to store them online, but I know nothing about them and won't use
them until I am convinced they're reputable and safe. Until I do, I'm stuck
with AOL, which is what they counted on when they developed their
bookmarking format.
