Subject: [ROOTS-L] Need definition of VA. Colonial Militia rank

In several lists of members of Virginia colonial militia there are men
listed as "Cadet" for their rank.

The sources I've searched, so far, state a Cadet is a student, such as at
Westpoint. Last weekend I was watching an old Civil War movie and there
was a reference to the scouts as Cadets.

Since I know that the men I am researching were adults, and would hardly
be considered students, I'm wondering if they were working in the
capacity of scouts for their particular militia group?
