Subject: [ROOTS-L] Re: Courthouse Records

You can take pictures of the books with a digital camera, but you do
need a steady hand. I regularly use a 4 megapixal camera in our local
library in lieu of making photocopies of books that are too old to be
photocopied. Generally the resulting images are quite readable. With my
camera, I usually have the flash turned on, but experiment both ways to see
what you get. With very large books, you may need to put them on the floor
and stand over them to get the whole page in one shot.

You may want to take more than one shot of each page, and you might want
to stop and check the pictures on your laptop if you are unsure of what you
are getting.

I do not know about today's hand scanners. I never had very good luck
with an earlier generation of hand scanners. I wholly recommend using the
digital camera.
